Steve Hayes, 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2022 at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.
Steve was born on December 22, 1948 in Savannah to the late Ander and Anna Lois Edenfield Hayes. He graduated from Robert W. Groves High School before serving in the United States Air Force for four years at several different locations including the Philippines and Thailand. After returning home to the states, Steve served in the Georgia Air National Guard from which he retired and also worked many years at Union Camp, now known as International Paper, until his retirement. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Savannah and loved fishing and watching the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia Bulldogs on television in his spare time. He also enjoyed playing chess and learning about astrology. Steve was an avid reader and writer, having had numerous letters to the editor published in the Savannah Morning News.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years, Linda Barrow Hayes of Jesup; three sons, Michael Hayes of Round O, South Carolina, Jamie Hayes of Jesup and Anthony Hayes and wife, Charity of Jesup; sister, Kathy Jernigan and husband, Ken of Round O, South Carolina; one aunt, Betty Hill of Savannah; four grandchildren, Shane , Hailey and husband, Carson, Kaidyn and Elijah Maxwell and one great granddaughter, Abigail. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members also survive.
A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Sandhill Baptist Church, 1936 Sandhill Rd. Guyton, GA 31312.
