Sherri Smith Hickox, 62, passed away on Monday February 7, 2022 at home under the care of GHC Hospice after a lengthy illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, Sherri was born on January 8, 1960 in Athens, Georgia to the late Leland and Faye Will Smith. She was a graduate of Wayne County High School in 1978 and worked for over thirty-four years at Wayne Memorial Hospital as secretary for the Education Department and secretary for the Nursing Director. Sherri was a lifelong member of Epworth United Methodist Church where she used her musical abilities to play piano, sing in the choir and also sing with the Smith Girls Trio. Her loyal and loving nature made Sherri a joy to be around and she loved taking care of her family and helping others in any way she could. Sherri was always a great cook and she loved baking cakes in her spare time which eventually led her into another part time job baking wedding cakes and assisting with weddings. In addition to her parents, her son, Ralph Waldon Ward, III, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Hickox of Ludowici; two sons, Wesley Ward and fiancé, Callie of Jesup and Adam Ward and wife, Megan of Brunswick; two stepchildren, Mandy Lynch and husband, John and Joey Hickox and wife, Becca all of Yulee, Florida; grandchildren, Gunter, Molly and John Owen; brother, Lee Smith and wife, Tandy of Jesup; three sisters, Dianne Mugerditchian and husband, Daniel of Chesapeake, Virginia, Karen Harrell and husband, Michael and Andrea York all of Jesup; two aunts, Barbara Baker and husband, Roy of Jesup and Nancy and Harold Guerry of Charleston, South Carolina and uncle, Harold Smith and wife, Rhonda of Waynesville; a sister-in-law, Debbie Carter of Yulee, Florida and her faithful canine companion, Barney. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Epworth United Methodist Church with Reverends Garth Barton and John Lynch officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church.
Private interment services will be held in Greenlawn Cemetery in Waycross.
