Rodney Alvin Tyre, Sr., 68, affectionately known by some as “RAT, ” his initials, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at Altamaha Health and Rehabilitation after a lengthy illness.
Rodney was born on August 8, 1957 in Wayne County, Georgia to the late, John and Nell Harper Tyre. He spent his early years in Jesup where he graduated from Wayne County High School. Rodney worked with the Department of Defense as a civilian on Fort Stewart for several years before relocating to Kings Bay in 1993. He worked at Kings Bay for twenty-seven years until his retirement in 2020. Rodney’s work ethic was second to none so he worked in the pest control business on the side to keep himself busy. When he wasn’t working, Rodney enjoyed watching the Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta Braves and old Westerns on television. A longtime member of Gardi Baptist Church, Rodney was generous, kind and funny. He loved to talk and he cherished the time he spent with his beloved family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, his brother-in-law, Robert Madray, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his son, Rodney Tyre, Jr. and wife, Mallary of Odum; siblings, Nelda Albert and husband, Buck of Crestview, Florida, Edwin Tyre and wife, Kay of Hawthorne, Florida, David Tyre and wife, Jane of Gardi and Shirley Madray of Brunswick and five grandchildren, Maddux, Mosley, Gabriele, Avary and Camden Tyre. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2025 at Gardi Baptist Church with Reverend David Bohannon officiating.
Interment will follow in Gardi Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Gary Ray, David Tyre, Jr., Darryl Murray, Jay Hill, Mike Woodard and Danny Howell.
