Richard Schortemeier Obituary

Richard Edwin Schortemeier, 80, passed away October 1, 2021 at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

A resident of Jesup for the past fourteen years, Richard was born on January 25, 1941 to the late Donald and Mary Reynolds Schortemeier.  He relocated to South Florida with his family when he was a child and was a graduate of South Broward High School in Hollywood, Florida. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served proudly at duty stations in Germany and Oklahoma.  After returning home from the service, Richard began a career of over forty-two years with Winn Dixie where he worked his way up to the position of Grocery Superintendent, managing the operations of the warehouse in Pompano Beach, Florida.  Richard was known to run a, “tight ship,” and his dedication to getting the job done right was second to none.  He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and he enjoyed fishing and traveling in his spare time.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Theresa Guirate Schortemeier and his step son, John Birbeck, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughter, Tracy Schortemeier of Jesup; stepchildren, Rose Stogner and husband, Harold of Jacksonville, Chuck Birbeck of Darien, Terry Lee Baraw and husband, Pete of Spring Hill, Florida and Scott Birbeck and wife, Caty of Old Towne, Florida; son, Donald Schortemeier of Elk City, Oklahoma; sister, Carolyn Swavely of Anderson, South Carolina and a host of grand and great grandchildren and extended family members.
