Mary Fleming (Riley) Odum

August 7, 1927 ~ February 7, 2022 (age 94)


Mary Fleming Riley Odum, 94, of Jesup, passed peacefully into God’s glory at her home surrounded by her family on February 7, 2022. She was under the wonderful and loving care of Pat Jernigan, Trisha Jernigan, Gloria Jones, Jessica Hines and Annslea Moon. 

A resident of Wayne County for more than 76 years, Mary was born on August 7, 1927 to the late Aplin C. Riley and Loris Inez Dubberly Riley. She was married to Wayne Godfrey Odum for forty-five long wonderful years until his death in 1993. They were avid square dancers. He was a Jaycee, and Mary was a Jaycette. For over 23 years, while Wayne managed the Standard Oil/Phillips 66 station in Jesup, Mary maintained tight order of the bookkeeping and Wayne himself. 

Mary was a member of The Jesup Garden Club and the Garden Club of Georgia. She was known for her beautiful gardens surrounding her home as well as her inventive manner of procuring transplants. Once she raised her two children, she returned to the school district to provide sustenance to another generation. Mary was a member of First Baptist Church, Jesup, Georgia for 75 years. Mary was an active member of her Berean Sunday Class and XYZ.

Survivors include her children, daughter, Mary Laotha Odum Carswell (Joe) of Augusta, Georgia, son, Wayne Riley Odum (Cecilia) of Prosperity, South Carolina. Known as Mimi, Mary had eleven grandchildren, Lisa Carswell Presnell (Tripp) of Brevard, North Carolina, Joseph Carswell (Leanna) of Augusta, Georgia, Daniel Odum of Prosperity, South Carolina, Jonathan Odum, Mary Odum Dixon (Brandon) of San Marcos, Texas, Elizabeth Odum Phillips (Jason) of Commerce, Georgia, Rachel Odum of Commerce, Georgia, Benjamin Odum (Katie) of Chapin, South Carolina, Michael Odum (Sylvia) of Prosperity, Georgia, Rebekah Odum (Varun) of San Francisco, California, and Joshua Odum of Prosperity, South Carolina. She was overjoyed to have nine great grandchildren, Finn Presnell, Aleta Jolly, Mackie Presnell, Anna Jane Carswell, Evvie Phillips, Elise Phillips, Gamble Carswell, Anna Riley Phillips, and Rosemary Phillips. Mary is already deeply missed by those who loved her and whom she loved. 

Graveside funeral services are planned for Thursday, February 10, 2022 at 3 pm at Jesup City Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to graveside services at the cemetery and again immediately following the service. The Reverend Doctor Felix Haynes will preside over the services.
