Larry Edward Coleman, 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 21, 2022 under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and his loving family.
A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, Larry was born on November 30, 1950 to the late Edward and Ruth Harris Coleman. As a young man, Larry worked on the family farm, cropping tobacco and working hard to help his family. At the age of three, he began his lifelong love of music. He was a member of the Wayne County High School Graduating Class of 1968 and worked for twenty years at Interstate Paper Company in Riceboro. Music was Larry’s passion. He taught himself to play the piano, guitar, drums and trumpet and he could play just about any other instrument you gave him to play. Larry was a staple in the Wayne County Productions and played to a packed crowd every year at Odum Day and during the Old South Farm Days in Walthourville. His musical talents took him all over the southeast as he played gigs in Hilton Head and Tybee Island. It has even been said that Larry could sing an Elvis Presley song better than Elvis himself! When he wasn’t playing music on the road or working, Larry took time to teach other young aspiring musicians the things he had learned and was influential in the lives of many of his students. He loved to “wheel and deal” almost as much as he loved music. Larry was a regular at yard sales and pawn shops as he searched high and low for a deal. Seems as though he would rather trade than buy on most occasions. He also enjoyed fishing, history and visiting with his friends and family, who he would always encourage to come by and visit. Larry was a long time member of the Odum United Methodist Church which is where love of music began so many years ago.
In addition to his parents, his twin brother, Jerry Henry Coleman and his sister, Janice Meaders, and his step daughter, Joyce Ennis, all preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-six years, Shirley Coleman of Jesup; two daughters, Christy Johnson and husband, Harper of Jesup and Shelli Carter and husband, Russ of Baxley; three stepchildren, James Stewart and wife, Raeleen of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Darryl Stewart and wife, Jeanine of Pembroke and Jody Stewart and wife, Melissa of Guyton; grandchildren, Kayla Overstreet, Sydney Herrin and Nicolas Carter; great grandchildren, Bryce and Wyatt Phillips and nieces, Carrie Howard and Dawn Meaders, both of McDonough and nephew, Kevin Meaders of Atlanta.
