Larry Blanton

Larry Blanton, 75, affectionately known by his family and friends as “Whip” passed away on Friday, April 17, 2020 at home under the care of Bethany Hospice after a lengthy illness.

A resident of Alma for the past eighteen years and  longtime former resident of Wayne County, Larry was born on October 27, 1944 in Walthourville to the late Lonnie and Eva Mae Blanton.  He was raised in the Crossroads Community and attended school in Odum.  Whip graduated from Odum High School in 1963 and went to work at Waynline of Jesup briefly before beginning a thirty-nine year career at Rayoiner where he would eventually retire several years ago.  He loved being outdoors, taking trips to the mountains, and hunting and fishing, especially fishing. Larry was a member of New Hope Freewill Baptist Church but had been attending Lee’s Chapel Baptist Church in Alma for many years.  In addition to his parents, his daughter, Anna Sha Blanton; his brother, Hubert Blanton; his sister, Emma Lee Sweat and his stepson, Dane Boatright, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Yawn Blanton of Alma; son, Timmy Blanton of Jesup; daughter Tammy Blanton Waters and husband, Dickie of Odum; stepdaughters, Dana Carter and husband, Tony of Alma and Kristi Barnes and husband, Robby of Baxley; three sisters, Evone Riggs and husband, Billy of Jesup, Etwendel Fennell and husband, Gary of Odum and Latrelle Durrence and husband, Dennis of Jesup.  A host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.

Graveside funeral services with COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines in place will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2020 in New Hope Cemetery with Reverend Greg Delk officiating.
