Joseph Dart Obituary

Joseph L. “Joe” Dart, 83, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the University of Florida Health Jacksonville.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, Joe was born on June 29, 1936 to the late William Robert Dart, Sr. and Annie Laurie Strickland Dart.  He was a graduate of Jesup High School and later attended the College of Middle Georgia, playing football for both institutions and being a part of the Jesup High School State Championship team in 1955. Joe served his country in the United States Army before returning home where he worked several different jobs including positions at Rayonier and the Federal Prison in Reidsville.  Soon after, he began a career with the United States Postal Service from which he would retire many years later.  He attended services at Immanuel Baptist Church and enjoyed watching football and auto racing on television.  Joe also enjoyed playing golf in his younger days but his favorite pastime by far was fishing.  He will always be remembered for his thoughtful, gentle ways and how he always concerned himself with the needs of those he loved more than his own.

In addition to his parents, his brothers, Tommy and Robert Dart and his infant daughter, Melody Dart, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughters, Sarah Copeland of Jesup and Lucy Dart of Hazlehurst; two brothers, George Dart and Walter Dart and wife, Carolyn all of Jesup; sister, Pauline Dart of Jesup; grandchildren, Cole Copeland and wife, Cara of Jesup, Cale Copeland of Jesup, Cary “Tater” Yarbrough  and wife, Brittney of Odum and Carlie Farmer and husband, Joey of Blackshear; great grandchildren, Caylee, Carson, Joe Mac, JoJo and Jacie; step grandchildren, Layton and Bailey and longtime companion, Gerrie Spruill and her daughters, Sharon Mixon and Sherry Schwartz.   A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.

Private graveside services will be held at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville at a later date.
