Jimmy Martin Obituary

Jimmy Martin, 76, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

A native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, Jimmy was born on January 19, 1941 to the late Carey and Vivie Boatright Martin. He retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation with over thirty-four years of service and was an avid sports enthusiast throughout his life. He played baseball and basketball when he was young and was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in Odum. His greatest love in life was watching his grandchildren play baseball and football. Jimmy also umpired at many baseball games and was a member of the Jesup Jaycees, the Wayne County Touchdown Club and the Wayne County Home Run Club. He attended church regularly at Calvary Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting in his spare time.

In addition to his parents, five brothers, Dennis, Delvin, Hyman, Willis and Earl Martin and two sisters, Willene Hires and Sallie Mae Rozier preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Faye Ray Martin; two sons, Carey Martin and wife, Suzi and Casey Martin and two grandsons, Caleb and Cooper Martin all of Jesup and two sisters, Betty Tillman and husband, Aubrey of Roswell, GA and Thelma White of Odum. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church in Jesup with Reverends Vann Dempsey and Matt Denison officiating.

Interment will follow in Odum City Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Terry Martin, Buddy Martin, Donnie Ray, Mark McGregor, Jerry Moody and Carl Ray.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Slover Hunting Club, Harris Pond House Cooking Crew, Staff of Harborview Nursing Home and the Staff of Community Home Health.

Remembrances may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 9, Jesup, GA 31598.

Jimmy was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend who leaves behind a wonderful legacy and fond memories to last a lifetime and as Jimmy himself would say, In other words, there is no way to say how much we are going to miss him.
