James Coye Overstreet, ”Jimmy,” longtime resident of Jesup, passed away on May 20, 2023 under the care of Hospice Savannah Inc. with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born January 18, 1945.
A 1963 Graduate of Waycross High School, Jimmy played varsity basketball and baseball. He attended Massey Business College in Jacksonville, Florida receiving an associate degree in Accounting. Jimmy served his country in the United States Army with service in Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Germany and Holland.
Jimmy had a strong work ethic even as a young boy in Waycross. He was the scoreboard keeper for the Milwaukee Braves Farm Team, a lifeguard at the Waycross Recreation Department and had a Grit Newspaper delivering papers on his bicycle. Jimmy retired from Rayonier after forty years of service. He also officiated basketball and baseball for the Georgia and Wayne County Official’s Association and for the Wayne County Recreation Department for over thirty-one years, along with the late, Jimmy Peek and the late Jimmy Martin. This trio of officials were in demand at tournaments due to their experience and accuracy at making calls. They were mentored by the late Johnny Tyre, Jimmy’s uncle. Jimmy and his son, Jamie also operated Overstreet Lawn Service for fifteen years in Jesup.
Jimmy and his son were devoted fans of the Wayne County Yellow Jackets and rarely missed a game or sports event. Jimmy loved athletics and was very knowledgeable about statistics in all major league and college sports. He was an avid Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs fan and was a longtime member of the Unity Church of God.
Survivors include his son, James Coye Overstreet, Jr. “Jamie,” of Jesup; two sisters, Jean O. Dougherty of Fernandina Beach, Florida and Mary O. Burroughs and husband, Ron of Savannah, Georgia; sister in law, Darlene H. Antley and husband, Bill of Port St. Joe, Florida and a brother-in-law, Ricky Hammond of Jesup, Georgia. Eight nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and extended family members also survive.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with Rev. Calvin Anderson officiating.
Private interment will be held at the Georgia Veteran's Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Jimmy Overstreet fund at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in care of Jeff Chandler to assist in medical and funeral expenses.
