Elbert Howard Obituary

Elbert Lee Howard, 87, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at home under the care of GHC Hospice and his loving family.

A lifelong resident of Wayne County, Elbert was born December 28, 1933 in Ludowici to the late Demery and Mamie Fulton Howard.  He served his country in the United States Army before he began working in the construction business, which he devoted his entire life to and was an expert carpenter, painter and electrician.  Elbert was a true “jack of all trades,” an expert at reading blueprints and could fix just about anything.  He retired from Bayer Corp. as a painter after many years of faithful service.  In his spare time, Elbert enjoyed fishing, making jokes, playing cards and shootin’ dice.  In addition to his parents, his sisters, Lilla Mae Tyre, Minnie Lee Roberson, Bertha McNicholl and Louise Ribron; his brother, Burel Demery Howard, Jr.; daughter, Myrtice Brown and son, Thomas Slone all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughters, Sarah Howard Mathis and Deanna Howard Miller both of Jesup; sons, Elbert Davis of Kingsland, Thomas Howard and wife, Teresa of Augusta and Joe Robert Howard of Kingsland; sister, Freeda Brazell of Ludowici; former wife and mother to his seven children, Mae Howard Starling; sister-in-law, Myrtice Howard of Brunswick and stepchildren, Stacie Hershaw and husband, Ulysses of Brunswick, Sharon Conway and husband, Chris of Kingsland and Richard Carver and wife, Tiffiny of Davenport, IA. Twenty-two grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members also survive.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at the Unity Church of God with Rev. Calvin Anderson officiating.
