Dorothy Hires Obituary

Dorothy Adele Langston Hires, 93, affectionately known as “Dot or Mrs. Dot,” passed away peacefully Thursday, October 3, 2024 at Hospice of South Georgia surrounded by love.

Dot was born on May 9, 1931 in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Julian Preston Langston and Dorothy Deforest Langston.  She spent her early years in Jacksonville, graduating High School in 1948.  Dot continued her education at Florida State University where she was recipient of a Bachelor’s Degree and also the Phi Beta Kappa Presidents Award. She soon began her teaching career where she taught English for one year a Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville before taking a position working as an underwriter with Prudential Insurance for nearly twenty two years.  In June of 1967, Dot met and married the love of her life, her late husband, Robert Gordon Hires.  The two relocated to Jesup, Georgia in 1975 where his family owned farmland and they raised cattle and produce.  After about two years, Dot gained her certification to teach in the State of Georgia and began to pursue her first love of teaching English again at Wayne County High School, a career she would pursue until her second retirement in 1993.  During this time, Dot continued learning and was recipient of a Master’s Degree from Georgia Southern University.  After her retirement, she and her husband, Gordon, enjoyed taking their produce to other towns to sell.  She was an avid reader who loved crossword puzzles and traveling.

A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, Dot was a very active communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild and ECW.  She served as a Lector at the Annual Diocean Conference for many years and was a part of the Pastoral Prayer Team. Dot enjoyed taking spiritual retreats and always loved centering prayer.
