Donald Westberry Obituary

Donald “Shot” Westberry, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 20, 2019 at Harborview Health and Rehabilitation under the care of Hospice of South Georgia surrounded by his loving family.

A resident of Savannah for nearly fifty years, Donald was born on July 16, 1936 in Jesup to the late W. Bryant and Hilda Durden Westberry.  He was educated in the Wayne County School System where he excelled in the athletic program, especially football.  In fact, he earned his nickname, Shot, with his ability to take off and run with the football.  Shot was a 1955 graduate of Wayne County High School and was well known for scoring the winning touchdown for the State Championship that year. Donald served his country in the United States Air Force.  His duty stations included appointments in Japan, eventually ending up in Warner Robbins before leaving the service and going into business for himself.  Shot sold insurance for a short time with Gulf Life Insurance Company and later owned and operated American Mobile Home Sales and Supply and A1 Mobile Home Movers both in Savannah until his retirement about ten years ago.  His work ethic was second to none and he continued working even after retirement.  Donald was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Savannah where he volunteered on numerous committees and loved his church family dearly. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Jesup and always enjoyed attending High School sporting events in his spare time.  Shot always remained active physically and was an avid biker who played on the adult softball team for Calvary Baptist Church in Savannah.

In addition to his parents, his two brothers, Bryant L. Westberry and Wendell G. Westberry; his sister, Brenda Westberry Phillips and brothers-in-law, Joseph Alvin Leaphart, Jr. and Frank Smith all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughter, Dona Ann Westberry of Statesboro; son, Warren D. Westberry, Jr. of Charleston, SC; siblings, Gwen Collins (Ben) of Florence, SC, Grace Smith of St. Mary’s, Wyman Westberry of St. Mary’s, Elizabeth Meehan (Terry) of San Jose, CA, Hilda Faye Westberry (Sam Rooks) of Jacksonville, FL and Beverly Leaphart of Jesup and one granddaughter, Morgan Westberry.  Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of extended family members also survive.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2019 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Reverend Dee Shaffer officiating.

Interment will follow in the Jesup City Cemetery with military honors rendered by the United States Air Force.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, John Westberry, Russ Smith, Jimmy Smith, Nick Burroughs, Jim Powell and Christopher Powell.
