Charles “Larry” Wheeler, age 88, of Jesup GA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 27, 2026, after a brief illness. Born in Wellsboro PA, Larry proudly served in the United States Military; spending 4 years in the Army between Germany and Fort Polk Louisiana and then served 37 years full time with the National Guard. During his time with the Guards he was a Maintenance Supervisor, for which he won numerous prestigious awards. Some of his most cherished moments were as an instructor at Fort Indian Town Gap, where is final resting place will be.
Larry was born to the late Charles and Iva (Colegrove) Wheeler on November 22, 1937. He grew up in Cherry Flats PA, and in January 1956 he married the love of his life, Joan. Together they would raise 4 children in Cherry Flats and would spend most of their lives there. Larry was involved in many organizations, including his time as a dedicated member of the Masons and being active in his Church. After his retirement from the National Guard, he continued to support and volunteer whenever possible.
Later in life, Larry and Joan purchased a summer home on Lamoka Lake in New York. This would become the location of countless family and friend reunions, picnics, and cookouts. In 2023 Joan and Larrys life would bring them to Jesup GA. Here, Larry would devote his time to Joan, with whom he shared 68 years with until her passing in August 2024. His care for Joan knew no limits, with her well-being and comfort always being his highest priority.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Joan (Pierce) and son Jeff. He is survived by his children Debbie (Jim) Hepler of Anna Maria FL, Danny (Kyong) of Jesup GA, and Kyle (Beth) of Lynn, MA. His grandchildren Heather, Heidy, Katrina, Jeffrey, Shawn, Dustin, Kate and Jason, several great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his sister Iva “Buddy” Maynard.
His life was led by faith, unwavering virtue, a great smile, and an even greater laugh.
