Beverly Ann Calhoun entered this world on July 25, 1944 and departed in her sleep on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Though her body grew weary after a long fight with several illnesses, her spirit remained vibrant—especially when it came to the expansive family she loved along with the cherished memories of her mother, sister and her longtime furry companion, Tompuppy.
After graduating high school, Beverly briefly served in the U.S. Air Force before following in her mother’s footsteps to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, working at psychiatric hospitals and women's correctional facilities. She spent many years in Atlanta, Georgia, living with her sister Lynda Packard. Together, they played a vital role in the lives of numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren, helping to guide them throughout their time here on Earth.
Beverly had a deep affection for animals, often feeding stray cats and eventually finding her longtime four-legged soulmate, Tompuppy, who remained loyally by her side for 17 years. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life—she was a committed member of Central Congregational United Church of Christ for over 25 years and continued to practice her faith throughout the entirety of her life.
In her later years, Beverly returned to South Georgia with her sister Lynda to be closer to family. She often said family is everything, frequently quoting her mother’s wisdom on devotion, faith, and practicality. Her values were shaped by her mother’s tireless work ethic and resilience—qualities Beverly admired deeply, especially the legacy of a home her mother built from the ground up in Savannah, Georgia, which still stands today.
Beverly took great pride in the accomplishments of her family and was a passionate advocate for justice. Her voice resonated in various online communities where she found connection, support, admiration and love from people around the world.
She is survived by her children Brenda Buck, Drake Calhoun, and Desmond Dossey; her sisters Grace Karp, Penny Barlow and Hazel Brotherton; and her brothers Troy Poteat and Timbo Calhoun. Beverly is also survived by a wide-reaching family that spans many states—dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom she loved deeply. She reunites in Heaven with her daughter Melanie Messex; her mother Ruth Calhoun; her sisters Lynda Packard and Trudy Brantley; and her brother Preston Calhoun, among other beloved family members.
The people who knew Beverly knew that her heart often ached for those she had loved and lost, and now she is finally reunited with them. While remembering her life and legacy, hopefully solace can be sought in the words of Philippians 4:7:
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Beverly now rests in that peace—free from pain, embraced by love, and surrounded by those who went before her.
