Jesup, GA-Leon A. Ellis, 76, died Friday, April 19, 2013 at home under the care of Heartland Hospice after an extended illness.
Leon, affectionately known as "The Cowboy" in his later years, was born on December 18, 1936 in Benton, New York to the late Alva and Francella Ellis. He was a diesel mechanic by trade for over thirty years where he worked for Howard Express and Herrs Motor Express. After retirement, he moved to Jesup where he worked part time at Jesup Tire and later at the Car Wash Express. In his spare time, Leon enjoyed the company of his four dogs and hunting and fishing. He also loved gardening and country music and had never met a stranger in his life. In addition to his parents, his infant sister, Doris preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Bonnie M. Ellis of Jesup; three daughters, Cindy Hauf of Waterloo, New York and Lori and Charlotte Ellis both of Canandaigua, New York; one son, Darryl Ellis of Penn Yan, New York; three step children, Michael Washburn of Texas, Carol Washburn of Jesup, Georgia and Douglas Washburn of Bloomfield, New York; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Burton and Jackie Ellis of Penn Yan, New York and John and Linda Ellis of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Pearl Preston of Newark, New York, Linda and Elwood Weber of Des Moines, Iowa and Charlotte and Bud Reifsteck of Marion, New York. Thirteen Grandchildren, eight Great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A memorial service, family gathering, and picture swap will be held at the Elk's Club in Canandaigua, NY on May 5th, 2013 from 2-4 pm.
