Jimmy E. Mockbee

Jimmy E. Mockbee, Sr., 73, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 10, 2020 under the care of Heartland Hospice after a lengthy illness.

A resident of Jesup for over thirty years, Jimmy was born on July 6, 1946 in Jacksonville, Florida.  While serving his country in the United States Army, he was involved in an accident leaving him with only one leg.  Jimmy didn’t let that slow him down.  His determination and drive was second to none and he believed in working hard and doing the job right. Jimmy owned and operated his own lawn care service for many years and loved working in his yard in his spare time.  He took great pride in keeping things neat and especially loved his flower garden.  Jimmy also enjoyed cooking and baking.  Many hours were spent baking fruit cakes and zucchini bread for his family and friends.

His father, Robert Wynn; his mother and step father, Melrose Hires Mockbee and Holmes Alvin Mockbee; his wife, Judy Mockbee and his uncle, Gordon Hires all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sister, Helen Melrose Jones and husband, Leroy of Yulee, FL; aunt, Dorothy “Dot” Hires of Jesup; cousin, Carolyn Comer of Inverness, FL and longtime friends and caregivers, Chris and Cynthia Griffis of Odum.  Numerous step children and a host of extended family members also survive.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with Reverend Stanley Todd officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Griffis, Brad Westberry, Cliff Crummey, Steve Larson, Josh Harris and Wayne Aldridge.

Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Heartland Hospice.
